Sustainability: hype or trend?

Sustainability is an issue that is on the agenda of every company. More and more companies promote their products based on environmental friendliness, energy efficiency and use of natural resources. This seems to be a hype, but according to Alcon Advies it is a lasting trend. This trend is fuelled by reports of resource scarcity (TNO predicts that metals necessary for alternative energy sources will prove to be a limiting factor), the structurally higher oil prices and global warming. The credit crisis has played a role in changing mind settings.

Recently, the Dutch textile and carpet industry held meetings in the framework of a roadmap study. Also at these meetings it was the common opinion that conservation of materials and energy resources and recycling have become a necessity. Sustainable production and sustainable products are an essential precondition for a successful business.

There are many organizations that undertake activities in the field of sustainability, both in commercial and non-profit basis. In vocational education, much attention is paid to sustainability. Alcon Advies is involved in activities at AMFI (Amsterdam) , Saxion Hogeschool (Enschede) and HAN (Arnhem) in sustainability.
